Ethletic fair trade canvas trainer with organic rubber sole

 Ethletic Canvas Shoe lo black-on-white
£36.50 posted to the UK

Click on the image to see the shoes from different angles.
Made at the same factory and - like all Ethletic shoes - certified on the sole by the Forestry Stewardship Council as using sustainable natural rubber. There isn't room for much detail on the sole of the shoe so more detailed certificate is available here.

Made at a factory in Pakistan that pays a living wage and where a fairtrade premium is distributed to make-up for the lack of a welfare state. At the moment people choose to split payments between health insurance and a micro-credit bank. There is a gap in Pakistan between healthcare provided by insurance and by charities such as the Sidi Trust, and health insurance for factory workers takes strain off the charities. Other statements about retailing fair trade shoes are at the foot of the page.

There are other ways of selling fair trade shoes, which by the rules of the fair trade federation have to be made in a third world country.

1

Publicise any human rights & corruption problems that exist in that country right next to a display of the fair trade shoes.
This doesn't sell many - or any - shoes but can be combined with a link to buy shoes direct from that country.
In these cases there is usually European Union 0% tariff so a factory with a paypal account can just post the shoes.
If they retail already there is no need for anyone to ask their permission to do this; it can just happen.

  • The UK website gets known as doing the right thing, or the wrong thing, or just known, and maybe sells something else.
  • The factory gets 100% of the money paypal give them and a fair trade certificate shows how the money gets spread-about.
  • The government agencies & third world elites who like to show progress get a shock when they google "ethiopia shoes". Particularly those agencies that condone religious agencies as agents for aid and turn a blind eye to what these agencies are doing to gay people wormen HIV issues and everyone really.

2

Publicise the welfare state benefits of countries which have higher manufacturing costs because they have a welfare state. Such as the Welfare State boots made in Slovakia (or potentially Portugal) where there are universally available hospitals pensions & more. The taxes that support these are cheaper than private insurance but more expensive than no insurance at all, which is what Chinese workers have, so there is usually a trend for Chinese shoes to under-cut the price of shoes from countries with a welfare state. It seems a bad system for Chinese workers and everyone who competes with them, until the price of running a welfare state is built-in to the advertising of the shoe. The same ethical value applies to goods made in the UK.
