There are other ways of selling fair trade shoes, which by the rules of the fair trade federation have to be made in a third world country. 1Publicise any human rights & corruption problems that
exist in that country right next to a display of the fair
trade shoes.
2Publicise the welfare state benefits of countries which have higher manufacturing costs because they have a welfare state. Such as the Welfare State boots made in Slovakia (or potentially Portugal) where there are universally available hospitals pensions & more. The taxes that support these are cheaper than private insurance but more expensive than no insurance at all, which is what Chinese workers have, so there is usually a trend for Chinese shoes to under-cut the price of shoes from countries with a welfare state. It seems a bad system for Chinese workers and everyone who competes with them, until the price of running a welfare state is built-in to the advertising of the shoe. The same ethical value applies to goods made in the UK. |
